A promising approach toward developing generalizations is to explore hypotheses that incorporate characteristics of both the invader and the recipient system. We present the first general test of the hypothesis that an invader’s impact is determined by the system’s evolutionary experience with similar species. Through a meta-analysis, we compared the taxonomic distinctiveness of highand low-impact invaders in several aquatic systems. We find that high-impact invaders (i.e. those that displace native species) are more likely to belong to genera not already present in the system.

Alien species in fresh waters: ecological effects, interactions with other stressors, and prospects for the future
1. Biological invasions are numerous in fresh waters around the world. At least hundreds of freshwater species have been moved outside of their native ranges by vectors such as ballast water, canals, deliberate introductions, and releases from aquaria, gardens, and bait buckets. As a result, many bodies of fresh water now contain dozens of alien species. 2. Invasions are highly nonrandom with r...
متن کاملLife history plasticity magnifies the ecological effects of a social wasp invasion.
An unresolved question in ecology concerns why the ecological effects of invasions vary in magnitude. Many introduced species fail to interact strongly with the recipient biota, whereas others profoundly disrupt the ecosystems they invade through predation, competition, and other mechanisms. In the context of ecological impacts, research on biological invasions seldom considers phenotypic or mi...
متن کاملA review of the biological characteristics of suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus Linnaeus, 1758) and its impacts on aquatic ecosystems
Following the report of suckermouth catfish (Hypostomus plecostomus) from Anzali Wetland, the present study was conducted to review the biological and ecological characteristics of this species and its effects on aquatic ecosystems. A literature review revealed that the suckermouth catfish is native to South America and one of the most popular species in the ornamental fish industry. This speci...
متن کاملAlien aquatics in Europe: assessing the relative environmental and socio- economic impacts of invasive aquatic macroinvertebrates and other taxa
Invasive alien aquatic species, including marine and freshwater macroinvertebrates, have become increasingly important in terms of both environmental and socio-economic impacts. In order to assess their environmental and economic costs, we applied the Generic Impact Scoring System (GISS) and performed a comparison with other taxa of invaders in Europe. Impacts were scored into six environmental...
متن کاملCharacterizing ecosystem-level consequences of biological invasions: the role of ecosystem engineers
Invasions by exotic species represent both threats to ecosystems as well as opportunities to learn more about them. Among the invaders that will have the largest impacts are those that directly modify ecosystems and thus have cascading effects for resident biota. Exotics can affect ecosystems by altering system-level flows, availability, or quality of nutrients, food, and physical resources (e....
